Starting a fresh PoE 2 event can expose the weakness in many supposedly top-tier builds: they look impressive in endgame footage but feel awkward during the campaign, especially when gear upgrades arrive slowly. For the September 4 Forbidden Rites event, Gemling Legionnaire offers a more practical route. I would level with grenades, keep my Path of Exile 2 Currency focused on useful equipment upgrades, and treat the early character as a platform for several endgame options rather than locking into one plan too soon.

Why Grenades Make the Best Opening

Grenade Gemling is effective because its early power comes from ordinary progression gear instead of a rare, highly specific setup. Explosive Grenade provides reliable area damage, Flash Grenade adds control, and Gas, Oil, or Cluster Grenade can fill gaps as different zones demand. The playstyle rewards movement: throw into the path of approaching enemies, create overlapping danger zones, then reposition before the next spawn reaches you.

The crossbow is the most important campaign upgrade. Added damage on the weapon directly improves the grenade package, while rings should cover added damage, life, and elemental resistances. Boots with movement speed are worth prioritizing even when their other stats are modest. Falling behind on weapon damage is usually more painful than missing a small passive-tree optimization, so regular vendor checks should be part of the leveling routine.

Arc Totems Are a Destination, Not a Starting Button

Arc Spell Totems becomes attractive around levels 65 to 70, when the passive tree can reach Ancestral Bond and the character has enough mana to support repeated totem placement. The build feels dramatically different from grenade leveling. Instead of constantly throwing skills, you establish several totems, let Arc chain through packs, and spend more time dodging or choosing the next position. It is a comfortable mapping experience, but only after its resource requirements are solved.

Spell Totem near level 23 is a useful progression target because it improves the practical totem setup without pushing mana costs into an uncomfortable range. Arc also benefits heavily from retaining additional chains, while Gemling Legionnaire turns skill quality into a meaningful source of reach and performance. A large mana pool, solid resistances, life, and a suitable Kurgal's Gaze matter more than chasing a flashy damage number on a single item. If the build feels fragile, defensive and mana upgrades will usually produce more real progress than another small offensive bonus.

Choose the Endgame Plan Around Your Hands

Arc Totems is the strongest choice for players who want range, low input, and dependable target coverage. Flameblast Oil Grenade is better for players who enjoy deliberate timing and persistent Burning Ground damage; its skill mechanics can carry a character through modest equipment. Twister Gemling Legionnaire has the highest long-term ceiling, but it asks for better gear, more planning, and a mature gem-quality setup. It should be viewed as a later project, not the default event opener.

That progression is the main reason Gemling Legionnaire works so well in PoE 2. Begin with grenades for campaign speed, move into Arc Spell Totems once the passive tree and mana pool are ready, or remain with grenades if their active play feels better. Flameblast is the damage-focused alternative, while Twister rewards substantial investment. Players planning to buy Path of Exile 2 Orbs should still prioritize resistances, life, movement speed, and the correct weapon before luxury upgrades, because a stable character clears more content than a fragile one with higher paper DPS.
